{"id":10566,"date":"2021-02-04T13:45:58","date_gmt":"2021-02-04T18:45:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.highlands.edu\/?p=10566"},"modified":"2021-02-04T13:45:58","modified_gmt":"2021-02-04T18:45:58","slug":"ghc-students-chemistry-research-published-national-journal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.highlands.edu\/2021\/02\/04\/ghc-students-chemistry-research-published-national-journal\/","title":{"rendered":"GHC student\u2019s chemistry research published in national journal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Georgia Highlands College (GHC) student Muhammad Hanzala\u2019s recent undergraduate chemistry research has recently been published in the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) Proceedings Journal.<\/p>\n<p>This April, Hanzala will present his work at the virtual NCUR 2021.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.highlands.edu\/2020\/09\/16\/ghc-students-undergraduate-chemistry-research-receives-national-attention\/\">Hanzala\u2019s road from research to publication began during his Chemistry 1 class with Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Hanzala\u2019s research advisor Erin Shufro.<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>His findings can be found among other research papers in NCUR\u2019s Proceedings Journal for 2020, available at <a href=\"http:\/\/libjournals.unca.edu\/ncur\/2020-2\/\">http:\/\/libjournals.unca.edu\/ncur\/2020-2\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cProfessor Shufro and I were looking for research projects to do and I noticed at my work that the amount of pentane, an expensive chemical, being used in fragrances was excessive,\u201d Hanzala, who works as a media and marketing analyst for a fragrance company, said.<\/p>\n<p>Hanzala said after discovering the problem, he and Shufro brought the method to GHC labs, refined it and made it cost effective, successfully reducing the price of an extraction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe experiment involved a lot of chemistry, so it was befitting that the research was done as a part of a chemistry class,\u201d Hanzala said.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Hanzala added he was surprised and excited to learn that his research had been accepted by the organization and that GHC gave him the tools he needed to take his research to the next level.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cOne of the most important things that GHC has is very easy access to brilliant professors who are always ready to guide and connect with me,\u201d Hanzala said. \u201cThroughout the research, the practice for presentation and the effort to submitting the research for publication, I always felt like I had the backing of all of GHC\u2019s faculty.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Hanzala is a member of GHC\u2019s Honors Program, lives in Cartersville and attends classes at the Cartersville site.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In addition to publishing academic journals, NCUR promotes undergraduate research, scholarship and creative activity in all fields of study by sponsoring an annual conference for college students.
