{"id":10706,"date":"2021-03-31T14:23:08","date_gmt":"2021-03-31T18:23:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.highlands.edu\/?p=10706"},"modified":"2021-03-31T14:29:24","modified_gmt":"2021-03-31T18:29:24","slug":"ghc-student-newspaper-wins-first-state-multiple-categories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.highlands.edu\/2021\/03\/31\/ghc-student-newspaper-wins-first-state-multiple-categories\/","title":{"rendered":"GHC student newspaper wins first in state in multiple categories"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Georgia Highlands College\u2019s student newspaper, the <a href=\"https:\/\/sixmilepost.com\/\">Six Mile Post (SMP),<\/a> won three first-place awards from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.savannahstate.edu\/class\/departments\/mass-communications\/srpi.shtml\">Southern Regional Press Institute (SRPI)<\/a> and a first-place award from the <a href=\"http:\/\/gapress.org\/about-us\/\">Georgia College Press Association (GCPA).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>From the SRPI, the SMP brought home first-place awards for Best Website, Best Opinion or Editorial in the Editorial category and Best Podcast or Internet Streamed Show as well as Best Campus Community Service-Sports for the GCPA.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis year\u2019s staff has only met in person one time this year and has still managed to produce quality, award-winning work that rivals previous years,\u201d SMP Faculty Advisor and Assistant Professor of Journalism and Communications Allison Hattaway said. \u201cThese students have covered history and covered it well \u2013 from COVID-19 to stink bugs to the 2020 election.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Julia Belew, who served as SMP Editor-in-Chief from August 2020 to February 2021, said she felt lucky to be surrounded such talented writers at the SMP. For example, Belew cited the work of managing editor Lily Chesnut.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir pieces portrayed real journalism and I am so glad they got the recognition they deserved,\u201d Belew said. \u201cI am also proud of winning first place for Best Opinion or Editorial for our unsigned \u2018Let\u2019s get down with pronouns\u2019 piece.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The SRPI judges noted \u201cbold, clear and unapologetic position on a widely discussed and misunderstood topic\u201d for the newspaper\u2019s editorial titled \u201cLet\u2019s get down with pronouns\u201d and cited individual reporters\u2019 data-driven, creative and eye-opening stories.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Current Editor-in-Chief Olivia Fortner, who is majoring in the Bachelor of Business Administration program, said she is very proud of all the staffers at SMP. Due to COVID, the routine of writers and contributors meeting in person to discuss current events and campus news has been put on hold.<\/p>\n<p>The SMP has been working remotely and communicating through Zoom, which creates a daunting scenario for students who are taking on the challenge of covering campus news in addition to their responsibilities inside and outside of the classroom.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cBecause of these changes, our staff is much smaller than it has been in recent years,\u201d Fortner said. \u201cHowever, I am not surprised that we received these awards because I have witnessed, firsthand, the hard work and dedication all the staff have put in to maintain excellence.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Taking on multiple roles had staffers and GHC journalism students like Brandon Dyer receiving awards for both writing and photography.
