{"id":10952,"date":"2021-06-17T12:18:56","date_gmt":"2021-06-17T16:18:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.highlands.edu\/?p=10952"},"modified":"2021-06-17T12:18:56","modified_gmt":"2021-06-17T16:18:56","slug":"entrepreneurship-program-ghc-helps-students-begin-grow-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.highlands.edu\/2021\/06\/17\/entrepreneurship-program-ghc-helps-students-begin-grow-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Entrepreneurship program at GHC helps students begin or grow their business"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cassidy Hite, of White, has always had a business idea, and she has always wanted to be her own boss: \u201cMy concept for my business is to take school buses, convert them into RVs, and rent them out for a luxury vacation you can take anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Hite chose <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.highlands.edu\/business-and-professional-studies\/entrepreneurship\/\">the new entrepreneurship pathway at Georgia Highlands College<\/a> to help bring her vision to life. In this pathway, students take a hands-on approach to starting a business. By engaging in outside-the-box, experiential learning, students gain the knowledge necessary to start, grow, and maintain a business.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The pathway is offered through the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.highlands.edu\/business-and-professional-studies\/\">School of Business and Professional Studies.<\/a> Students who complete the pathway will graduate in as little as two years and will have constructed a comprehensive business plan.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Hite, who is working on a plan around her school bus conversion idea, stated the faculty are top-notch and have been paramount to her success in the program, giving her the confidence to move forward with her business idea.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10955 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.highlands.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/schoolspic2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.highlands.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/schoolspic2.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/www.highlands.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/schoolspic2-450x300.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.highlands.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/schoolspic2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.highlands.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/schoolspic2-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Michelle Douglas, of Rome, saw the GHC program as a way to grow her existing business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already have my own home cleaning business, but I wasn\u2019t really sure what to do to take it further,\u201d Douglas said. \u201cWhen I heard about the entrepreneurship pathway at GHC, I knew it was meant for me to enroll in the program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She described a \u201clight bulb\u201d moment occurred during a class discussion.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI was talking about my cleaning business and ideas were being thrown around about how I could incorporate my own cleaning products,\u201d Douglas said. \u201cSo, now I can provide cleaning services but also sell my clients my products which is another source of income.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Douglas said not only does the pathway help her to learn strategies and generate new ideas for expanding her business, but it has helped her gain a new perspective as a business owner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis whole experience has been an amazing journey. I feel empowered,\u201d Douglas said. \u201cGHC has taken me to a whole new level\u2026 There\u2019s always more to learn and room to grow when it comes to your career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Assistant Professor of Business Administration Shanika Wright-Turner explained the program goes beyond the classroom with multiple real-world learning opportunities, including consultation with highly successful business leaders.<\/p>\n<p>On one occasion, students met with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doyoubuzz.com\/raychel-jones\">Raychel Jones,<\/a> entrepreneur and creator of \u201cI Beat Daily\u201d The Official Producer Battle, and Co-founder of PenGame ATL, who attended the class and gave each student feedback on their ideas.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cStudents were thrilled to have a successful entrepreneur work with them individually,\u201d Wright-Turner said. \u201cIn the near future, we are looking to add a mentorship program that matches each student enrolled in the entrepreneurship pathway with a leader\/entrepreneur in their area of interest.
