{"id":11242,"date":"2021-09-08T14:46:01","date_gmt":"2021-09-08T18:46:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.highlands.edu\/?p=11242"},"modified":"2021-09-08T14:46:01","modified_gmt":"2021-09-08T18:46:01","slug":"childhood-actress-mrs-doubtfire-speak-mental-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.highlands.edu\/2021\/09\/08\/childhood-actress-mrs-doubtfire-speak-mental-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Childhood actress from \u2018Mrs. Doubtfire\u2019 to speak on mental health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Next week, former childhood actress and current mental health advocate Lisa Jakub, who took on roles in movies such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0107614\/\">\u201cMrs. Doubtfire\u201d<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0116629\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\">\u201cIndependence Day,\u201d<\/a> will speak virtually at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.highlands.edu\/\">Georgia Highlands College (GHC)<\/a> on ways to cope with anxiety, the value of self-acceptance, and methods for recognizing anxiety in your life.<\/p>\n<p>Titled \u201cAnxiety, Depression &amp; Learning to Embrace Your Weird,\u201d the event, which is free and open to the public, will be held via streaming on Zoom beginning at 2 PM on Tuesday, Sept. 14.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMental health has often been ignored, especially on college campuses, but I think in the wake of the pandemic more people are paying attention to it,\u201d Cocurricular and Transition Programs Coordinator Clifton Puckett said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s even more important to focus on anxiety and depression now, because we\u2019re all feeling the weight of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>GHC, through the Department of Student Engagement and <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.highlands.edu\/student-support-services\/thrive-ghc\/\">the Thrive@GHC initiative<\/a>, has placed an emphasis on promoting a lifestyle of holistic wellness for students. <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.highlands.edu\/student-support-services\/thrive-ghc\/\">Thrive@GHC<\/a> gives students 24\/7 access to counselors and mental health resources.<\/p>\n<p>Jakub\u2019s presentation is based around her second book, titled \u201cThe Anxiety Book: Not Just Me,\u201d which is described as \u201ca hopeful, entertaining, enlightening look at the root causes of anxiety, the latest research on mood disorders, and ideas for how we can all live authentically with more peace, power and purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Puckett said he spoke with Jakub on Twitter after reading about her advocacy for mental health awareness.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She was responding to one of those \u2018Where are they now?\u2019 articles that asked \u2018what the oldest daughter from \u2018Mrs. Doubtfire\u2019 has been doing since the movie,&#8217;\u201d Puckett said. \u201cAfter I saw the tweet, I followed her account and liked what she had to say about mental health and thought she\u2019d be a great speaker for our students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Please email <a href=\"mailto:studentengagement@highlands.edu\">studentengagement@highlands.edu<\/a> for details on how to access the Zoom presentation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Next week, former childhood actress and current mental health advocate Lisa Jakub, who took on roles in movies such as \u201cMrs. Doubtfire\u201d and \u201cIndependence Day,\u201d will speak virtually at Georgia Highlands College (GHC) on ways to cope with anxiety, the value of self-acceptance, and methods for recognizing anxiety in your life.
