Georgia Highlands College\u2019s student newspaper, the Six Mile Post, finished the 2018-2019 academic year with a bang, bringing home awards from the Georgia College Press Association, the Southern Regional Press Institute and the Associated Collegiate Press.<\/p>\n
This year, a new group of students and a new faculty adviser are leading the newspaper into its next volume.<\/p>\n
Editor-in-Chief Olivia Fortner, a sophomore business administration major and the paper\u2019s returning lead editor, is looking forward to another successful year for the publication.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe hope to be an award-winning newspaper again this year,\u201d she said. \u201cThe team we have now is competent and talented. Though many of us are new to the newsroom, the skill sets and personalities here have a lot to bring to the table.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Assistant Professor Allison Hattaway, the organization\u2019s new adviser, thinks the Six Mile Post will improve those skill sets even more.<\/p>\n
\u201cI believe that students really gain a tremendous amount of confidence when they participate in a student publication staff,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ve also seen how well a staff bonds as they work together and friendships are formed that last lifetimes. It\u2019s a very special and unique team to be a part of.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Like many on the student staff, this is Hattaway\u2019s first year with the paper, as well. While she\u2019s new to the Six Mile Post, she isn\u2019t new to student publications. She previously advised both the student newspaper and yearbook groups at Shorter University. Hattaway is excited to bring her expertise to the Six Mile Post.<\/p>\n
\u201cI see it as a wonderful opportunity to represent students across all campuses and to help students gain a solid journalism foundation,\u201d she said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
