MP Alex Ruff was re-elected in Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound on Sept. 20, and we thank all voters who took the time at the day’s polls or advance polls to have their say.

The Chamber was delighted to partner with the Owen Sound & District and the Meaford chambers, to bring local issues to our Candidates via an all candidates meeting on Sept. 14.

It’s a good idea – and perhaps a necessary one – to carry proof of vaccination with you. Restaurants, meeting establishments, and many others are now legally obligated to confirm your proof of vaccination before allowing you entry. This endeavour is in the hope of avoiding another business lockdown, by restricting access to community-used locations to those who have been fully vaccinated.

This is NOT the choice of the store staff, so if you choose not to participate in the vaccine program or do not have the necessary proof of vaccination, please do not take it out on staff. Rather, express your frustration to the government.

A quick online search for “Ontario vaccine passport” will tell you everything you need to know.

The Municipality of Grey Highlands Council has been discussing a proposed sign by-law for several weeks. The Chamber’s Council liaison, Tom Allwood, feels that if the by-law is approved it will have an impact on our Members, and as such he has asked us to poll our membership for feedback. We have obliged and are awaiting responses. We will provide a summary report to Council. Our collective voice matters.

The MTO recently came through Markdale, painting lines on Highway 10 as a “don’t drive here” message. The line-enclosed areas are for parking, not for driving, passing, or turning (yes, I know these too are forms of driving). Markdale is a one-lane north, one-lane south town, as is Flesherton, as it always has been. It is our hope that parking lines will be installed within these spaces by the Municipality to ensure proper use.

We’d intended to present a one-hour session with Executive Leadership Coach Parm Chohan on last Wednesday evening, but we’re rescheduling. Watch for further details, or if you’re excited and want to be among the first to know, please call the Office.

50/50 DRAW

Support your Chamber! We’ve printed 500 tickets for a 50/50 draw, with the winning ticket to be drawn at our Annual General Meeting in November. Call or email the Office for current information on purchase locations. As of now, you can reach out to any Board member or purchase tickets at our Office, Highland Grounds in Flesherton, or Kim’s Place, The Market Shoppe, or PJ Knickerbockers in Markdale. Someone’s going to have a nice Christmas shopping budget this year.

This week, we explore Rocklyn.

Did you know…

Rocklyn once had a brickyard, located near the arena. It also had a cheese shop in the late 1800s that shipped all the way to Winnipeg, but no one’s discovered where the shop was located.

Rocklyn Inn is on the site of the Lorne Hotel, built in 1881. After fortuitous lightning in 1891, it burned down, but was rebuilt. Later life included a post office and a butcher shop. Now it’s a B&B and ice cream parlour.

Rocklyn General Store began as a hotel in 1857 and later that century became a co-op store.

The Chamber has a walking tour of Rocklyn that you can pick up from our Office, and from various tourism ambassadors around the municipality, including Highland Grounds in Flesherton and The Market Shoppe and Brilliant Bread inn Markdale.

The Chamber supports these Rocklyn businesses: Rocklyn General Store and Rocklyn Inn B&B and Ice Cream & Snack Shop.

We’re pleased to have them as Members and support their success. Learn more about them by visiting the Chamber’s Online Business Directory, which will be available in print next spring.
